As of early July 2026, the CDC reported over 843 plus cases of cyclosporiasis across several states. Investigations into contaminated food sources are ongoing as outbreaks may take weeks to months to complete. While investigations and illness counts continue, one thing is already clear: traceability matters. Regulatory expectation such as those in the Food Traceability Rule (FT Rule) continue to evolve, but beyond compliance, effective traceability is a business imperative. Organizations that invest in strong traceability systems are better positioned to respond quickly when an incident occurs.

After review of FDA’s updated FAQs and its public meeting highlights, it is clear that gaining clarity of the rule’s requirements through detailed review of the requirements, staying aware of emerging flexibilities and best practices as well as training are important steps towards achieving compliance. Though the rule allows industry flexibility in approaches used for implementation, it requires certain aspects to be documented including key data elements and the development of farm maps and traceability plans. The FDA’s recent exercises tested whether participants could locate traceability records associated with the handling of a specific product during a short, defined date range, and provide the information from those records in an electronic sortable spreadsheet within 24 hours. This is consistent with the requirements of the FT Rule. Simulations found that most could provide data in 24 hours but also uncovered opportunities with certain data elements, especially Traceability Lot Codes (TLCs)  and data quality and completeness varied across critical tracking events.
